Carlos Gómez, member of the UN Human Rights Committee, inaugurates the LIDIB 2021 Seminars

On Friday 17 September, Mr. Carlos Gómez, a judge of the High Court of the Balearic Islands and a current member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, inaugurated the second cycle of LIDIB human rights seminars with the conference: “What is the legal value and effectiveness of the Human Rights Committee’s decisions?”

43 students have signed up for this cycle of seminars aimed at both students and teachers who want to share a space to learn more about human rights and share reflections, concerns and questions on how to guarantee fundamental rights and freedoms.

In this cycle we will talk about a number of human rights topics that LIDIB’s members are currently researching: How does the climate change impact on human rights? How and why do we protect rights and freedoms in times of crisis? What protection do victims of human trafficking have in law and in practice? Does the victim of a crime have a “right to punishment”? How does the European Convention on Human Rights apply to the limitations of fundamental rights related to covid19? How do tourist rentals affect the right to housing in Spain and in the Balearic Islands? Does the minimum interprofessional wage guarantee a dignified existence? Let’s talk about female genital mutilation: how is it treated criminally? What rights do detainees have (and why)? What is hate speech and how does it affect vulnerable groups?

This series of seminars is coordinated by Professor Margalida Capellà and is part of the teaching innovation project “Teaching human rights in the Law Faculty” (academic year 2020-2021)
