Within the framework of the activities organized by the Balearic Institut for Women on the occasion of the international day on the elimination of violence against women, Professor Valentina Milano, a member of LIDIB, delivered a conference entitled “Strengthening the state response to trafficking in women: an analysis from a human rights approach”. After presenting the most recent data and trends on the phenomenon of trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation in Spain, she examined the international and national legal framework applicable to trafficking and, thereafter, the framework applicable to prostitution, noting that the vast majority of Spain’s obligations under international and European instruments have not been adequately transposed into domestic legislation and / or in the State’s practice. The importance of adopting a law on trafficking in Spain and the advantages of approaching prostitution from an abolitionist perspective has been discussed.
